"Berthold Wolpe had succeded Heinrichsen as Koch's assistant at the Offenbach Kunstgewerbeschule in 1929, and was, in 1934, also teaching lettering at the Städel, the Frankfurt art school, a post to which he had been appointed in 1930 upon Koch's recommendation.
The year saw the publication of a memorable collaboration between Koch and Wolpe -a charming book of 24 alphabets, Das ABC Büchlein (The Little ABC). The alphabets were cut in wood and metal by Fritz Kredel and Gustav Eichenhauer (...) When this ABC Büchlein was planned Rudolph Koch said, 'Let's do a book for the fun of doing it, of alphabets only -without any text- and therefore international.' Hence the book is not a copybook in the usual sense but a collection of more or less spontaneous alphabetical compositions. Some are lighthearted, some follow stricter styles, but all show a a certain spirit of enjoyment."
