Paul Schuitema. De Gemeenschap, 6 jaarg., nummer 3, 1930

“It was essential that our designs should be taut and arresting. The first and most important colour was red. Blue and yellow came later. We always used primary colours, never mixtures. We favoured sans serif type: condensed and spaced, bold and light. These were the principles on which we worked. Photomontage was equally important to us. We applied the photograph freely to the flat rectangular surface, never making use of proportion or of drawing for that would have been too much like painting. If we drew we abstracted or simplified as much as possible and went straight for the objective without any romantic trimmings.”

Paul Schuitema. "New typographical design in 1930".  Neue Graphik, 11 (December 1961)
