"Tempest originated from lettering primarily done for a book-jacket which was so effective that it was decided to experiment further with the complete alphabet. After many adjustments of the letters to suit all combinations of words, the alphabet was passed to the Monotype Corporation for cutting. It was my desire to have a type for book-jackets and broadsides which was completely divorced from the formal but rather static sans italics so much in vogue. The curves to the horizontals explain themselves. They add a sense of movement and a feeling of urgency to the words."
