"Berthold Wolpe joined Faber & Faber in 1941, at the end of one of the firm's most brilliant decades, during which the format and house style of the Faber book had been established by Richard de la Mare (...) The distinctiveness of a Wolpe jacket -which he always insisted was a small poster for the book- was the idiosyncratic and highly expressive lettering or type display of title and author, printed on stock paper (...) De la Mare, for whom he was working, recognised his great gifts, and although a most self-effacing person in his own visual tastes, allowed Berthold to initial his drawn jacket designs with W or BLW."
