Karl Gerstner. Die neue Graphik. Teufen: Arthur Niggli, 1959
“The first book which described ‘Constructive’ graphic design, and gave it a historical context -much as Lohse had done in the first issue of Neue Grafik- was Die neue Graphik (The New Graphic Art) by Karl Gerstner and Markus Kutter. It examined and illustrated graphic design’s origins, ‘its evolution, its peculiarities, its tasks, itsproblems, its manifestations, and its future prospects’. Published in 1959, a year after Neue Grafik’s first issue, the book covers a wider range than the journal. The ‘new graphic art’ is shown to be almost as much American as it is European -or Swiss. ‘Art has no frontiers’, say the authors. The illustrations, many seen for the first time, immediately established a canon of important works.”
